Prince William and Kate Middleton love their family of five: The pair shares three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis. Recently, however, the royal family added to their bunch: They welcomed a beloved black cocker spaniel in 2021. Their canine’s name has always been kept under wraps, though—until now. In a new portrait of Princess Charlotte—which the Duchess of Cambridge took in honor of her daughter’s seventh birthday and shared on Instagram—Kate affectionately revealed that the female pup’s name is Orla, reports People.

The name is fitting for the royal family’s dog; Orla is a Celtic name that means “golden princess.” This snap also marks the first time that the pet has been featured in a photo. Princess Charlotte was all smiles with one arm wrapped around the two-year-old pup, which the family received from Kate’s brother, James. His dog, Luna, had “six healthy little pups,” that “all [had] lovely homes waiting for them” at the time.

This isn’t the only dog that Prince William and Kate have brought into their family. Their first dog, Lupo, was a cocker spaniel that came into their lives in 2012, nearly one year before Prince George’s birth. He was from a litter “with a close family connection,” notes a source near to the royal family, People reports.

Lupo also helped keep the duchess company during William’s deployment. “When Prince William was away in the Falkland Islands, he went for dinner with some good friends of ours in the Air Force, and he was saying how difficult it was for Kate because he was leaving for six weeks. It was when they’d just got the Spaniel to help her with the time apart,” a source revealed to another People source.
