Prince William and Kate Middleton’s royal wedding was one for the history books—which they marked almost 11 years ago today. The pair’s big day fell on April 29 and took place at Westminster Abbey during a live televised event. The wedding may have been grand, but that didn’t keep Prince William from making light of the moment to keep everyone’s nerves at bay. According to Marcia Moody’s biography, Kate: A Biography ($4.75, amazon.com), the Duke of Cambridge joked with his bride and her father, Michael Middleton, once they arrived at the altar.

The author noted that Prince William greeted the two of them by saying: “Just a quiet family wedding, then,” nodding cheekily at the massive crowd behind them. Though his joke surely eased some anxiety, Kate’s dad previously shared that the wedding ceremony processional wasn’t very nerve-wracking, since he had his daughter on his arm.

After the couple tied the knot, they shared even more intimate, exclusive moments like these—regardless of the royal family and the crowds of fans alike watching them. When they stepped out on the balcony at Buckingham Palace after the pair became husband and wife, Kate said, “Wow,” the Mirror reported. The thousands of well-wishers who gathered around to congratulate the newlyweds chanted for the Duchess, exclaiming “We want Kate, we want Kate,” and asked Prince William to “Kiss her, kiss her.”

In response to the chants, Prince William turned to Kate and said, “Go on, a little kiss, go on.” This marked one of their first public kisses as a married couple. The Duke of Cambridge added, “Let’s give them another one. I love you. One more kiss, one more kiss. Okay?” This second kiss prompted the crowd to cheer even louder, apparently even making one of the bridesmaids cover her ears.
