Whether you’re a fall bride or a guest attending an autumnal celebration, you’re probably wondering what to wear. After all, temperatures vary greatly during the fall—while the ceremony could be balmy, the weather could quickly turn chilly just in time for the reception. That’s why you may want to invest in some articles of clothing that can keep you warm once the temperature begins to dip—but still ensure you look wedding-appropriate.

While a coat would work, they’re often bulkier than you need during this season. So, if you’re looking to leave those heavy jackets behind, it never hurts to invest in something lighter such as a shawl, cape, or bolero, as they definitely provide warmth without taking away from the rest of your ensemble. If you need helping finding the best outerwear for any upcoming fall wedding—whether you’re the bride or a guest!—you’re in luck. We talked to two experts about the pieces that are best suited to this season and an event as special as a wedding.

Go for a Faux Fur Bolero

Whether you’re a bride or a guest, a faux fur is a perennially stylish option during the cooler months. “A fur or faux fur bolero is an excellent addition to have for a fall wedding, especially one with a mountain theme,” suggests Kaeleigh Testwuide, owner of The Diamond Reserve. If you’re looking for something cozy and romantic, there’s no better option.

You Can Also Wear a Lace Bolero

As a bride, you might want an accessory that speaks more to occasion. In that case, think about lace. “A lace bolero also creates a romantic yet conservative finish to any wedding look,” Testwuide says. This kind of bolero can be worn for an outdoor ceremony, she explains, but removed later for a different evening look.

Choose a Trend-Forward Cape

The coolest new accessory in the world of bridal fashion? Definitely the cape. It’s a better choice for a bride than a guest, though, and it’s more for style than it is for function. “You can wear a cape to a fall wedding, but it’s important to keep in mind that this option may be more for coverage than actual warmth,” says Julie Sabatino, expert bridal stylist and founder of The Stylish Bride. Depending on your climate, a heavier material like satin might keep you warm enough to make it through the ceremony, but it’s important to have a back-up plan in the event that you’re still chilly.

Select a Pashmina

Whether you’re the bride, a bridesmaid, or a guest, a pashmina is always a good option. They’re easy to carry in a purse, they’re warm, and you can choose a style that coordinates with your attire, Sabatino says. The pro also adds that they’re affordable: You can find a good quality pashmina in a variety of different price points in stores and online.
